What can we do differently?

My boss treats his employees differently....what can I do?

  • I work at a VERY small company - total of 6 employees and 2 of them are the owner's sons who run the place. Anyway, been here for almost 2 years and haven't gotten a raise in 16 months and when I was hired i was told it was annual raises. They also told me I would have paid vacations and benefits after my 1 year mark - and now the story has changed. I have NEVER got any paid vacation days and I just put in for 2 days off in June because we are going on vacation. I was told, along with another employee, that they can't afford to give paid vacations right now and all that - but, then a 3rd employee put in their vacation and are getting paid!!! WTF?? What can I do about my boss being unfair, paying some and not paying others, and making me all those promises that never came through??? I AM thankful that I have a job but, I am being treated unfairly. This is the first time I have asked for time off. They have done other shady things in the past as well with my pay - this is not the first occurrence. Thanks!

Quit and find another job. They are under no legal obligation to treat you all the same unless you feel that you are being discriminated against because of your sex, religion, or race. Unfortunately, vacation and other benefits are also at the discretion of the boss and unless you have a contract he can change them at any time. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

Report them to the Department of Labor they should be treating you equally and if you have held a verbal agreement on the benefits and vacation you may have a case against them.

Look for another job..There is nothing you can do and if you stay you will just keep building resentment towards your boss...If you feel determined to stay then request a meeting with your boss and address your feelings..

Unless you have an employment contract stating you receive certain benefits, I don't think there is much you can do. The company can promise whatever incentives they like, but a verbal promise is not usually a binding contract. Since they said you would receive these benefits after one year of service, it could be the situation changed because of changing economic realities. While other employees continue to receive this benefit because they had already accrued vacation days. To be perfectly honest, I think you have two options. Be glad you have a job and live with it. Or look for a new job.

Unfortunately, I have to say that you have to get used to being treated unfairly by businesses. It's just what they do. You're a number only and completely expendable. I hate to be such a bummer, but after 35 years of working in the outside world, that's the conclusion I've come to. It's the exact reason I went to work for myself last year. In the business world, you are the only one you can completely trust. Hope it works out for you, one way or another. Regards, Tony Thomas

Start keeping a log of any discrepancies. Be sure to list the date, time, who was involved and a brief description of the incident/event. This will serve you in reporting any incidents to authorities and/or a legal service. This site lists legal rights/issues of employees: http://www.workplacefairness.org/your-rights?agree=yes The site also has other information about unfair practices in the workplace. You may have a lawsuit here. Good luck to you.

Gee, this sounds like an online greeting card company that I worked for for many years. It isn't based out of Hawaii is it? Anyway, if your contract wasn't in writing, there is little you can do about it. I'd look for another job if I were you. Don't let them treat you like that.
