Tips on how to get a job in a music shop?

  • I'm moving soon closer to a music shop me and my Dad have been to several times over the years. We know the owner reasonably well but most of the staff there are 20-30 apart from two girls I suspect are his teenage daughters. They are always in the store reading and sometimes helping out. I turn 16 in four months and am keen on getting a part-time/Saturday job. I was thinking of working at HMV, however, there isn't one near where I'm moving too so I guess it wouldn't be too practical. The music shop would be about 15-20mins away from my house but I'm really unsure about how to ask for a job. It's a pretty big shop for a music shop, but it's owned by one elderly guy so is pretty close-knit. It's pretty famous in East London/Essex so there are usually quite a lot of customers, so I think they might need more staff. I'm really unsure how to go about it: should I ask for an application? Go on their website? Ask the owner himself? I get shy when I go into the store and usually let my Dad do the talking, even though I'm pretty confident usually. What kinds of thing would I be expected to do? Would I have to take some kind of training to learn more about musical instruments? I know quite a bit but am afraid I might look like an idiot in front of customers. Also, what kind of pay/hours would you estimate I'd expect to get/do? Would I get discounts on stock? I have so many questions and have an idea of getting a job there but am really unsure how to go about it? I've looked online an there are no tips about what is involved in working in a music shop or how to apply. Can you guys help? Cheers. XD P.S Sorry -- didn't really know where to put this. :-S

  • Answer:

You should speak to the staff at the shop, a practical approach seems the best. Only the employer of the specific shop you want to work at can tell you when you're needed, and show you round the store. Take a deep breath, and say, 'I'm looking for a part time job, i was wondering if there are any vacancies? I'd like to work here.' The staff should take it from there, and conversation will come naturally. They might want to know if you have any experience, but if you don't have any, don't worry. Explain you'd like to learn, you try to be organized and that you're reliable, on time. They might give you a trial period. As for wages. The minimum in the US is $6.55 per hour. Or £5.52 (for those aged 22+) in the United Kingdom. However, exceptions can be made for those under 21, because legally your employer doesn't have to pay you the full minimum wage. Good luck, and hope i helped. =]
