How do I find customers?

I want to mow lawns for money this summer. How do I find customers?

  • I want to mow lawns in my area for cash. How do I get customers? And how do I know how much to charge?

  • Answer:

Create some simple advertising flyer's offering your lawn mowing service and as an incentive to your prospects, offer a first lawn cut for free or at a discount of say 10% for a limited time only. Put ads in your local paper, community paper, school puplications, shop windows, anywhere you see people placing ads for work. Make your advertising stand out from your competition, for example; print your ad copy on yellow paper with bold black wording, its a proven format but test it out with different coloured paper and measure your results. Then keep doing what works. Call your competitors and ask for a free quote to check their pricing, ask your friends to make some calls to help you with price comparisons. Then used this free information to establish your price. When you're getting quotes make sure you ask your competitors to disclose what you will be getting for your money, like; do they include cutting the edges of your lawn along pathways and drives, do they clear their lawns of dog poop, plant debris, kiddy's toys etc (because these things can slow you down and your time is money) in their quote? Just make sure you always give a top service to your clients and your lawn mowing services will be sought after.

If you have access to a printer you could make fliers to print and post on various public bulletin boards such as supermarkets, Doctors office, restaurants. Make business cards too and hand out door to door or whenever you see someone out in their yard in the neighborhood. Even better go to your local real estate offices and ask to place business cards there. With the sales of homes you often get new homeowners in the area that don't know how to find local reliable services. They see your card in the office and might pick it up for the future. You could post a small ad in your local pennysaver/ and or advertising magazines. You could also offer 10% initial discount on your service so people would be more inclined to try you out. As far as how much to charge you could Pretend to be a customer and call up other ads in your area and inquire of them to get a feel of the price. Basically though you could suggest that price is negotiable in your ad when meeting with a customer as everyones lawns are very different. You certainly don't want to charge $10.00 for all lawns as some might be all uphill, heavy terrain etc. hope this helps
