How to charge diffrential tax?

How to charge customer's sales tax & of that sales tax, how to file quarterly to the state?

  • I recently obtained a reseller's license in California for my small business and am clueless as to how to charge my customers. The guidebook is NO help. I need examples to help me understand, unfortunately everyone is telling me different stories! I opened a flooring store that provides materials &/or labor. I know that labor cannot be sales taxed but my prices already include labor. Would I now have to itemize everything? And when I do charge customers' a sale tax on materials, of that what is filed/paid to the state?

  • Answer:

Contact the California Department of Revenue. They will provide the information you need.

Other answers

You'll have to separate taxable and non-taxable items/labor on the invoice. If you want to sell items with labor included then you will have to charge tax on the entire sale. I highly recommend using Quickbooks, as you can easily set it up to give you detailed sales tax reports when it comes time to file those taxes. Also, it is the Board of Equalization in California, not the department of revenue.
