How do I start up a import/export business?

  • I am an American living in China, and I hear all the time that a fortune is to be made by buying in China and selling elsewhere. I also hear about tough import laws in the US. What do I need to get started? Do I need a business license? Do I need to register with a government agency? Anything else I am forgetting?

    The best way to start an import/export business is establish a trading company at the nearest U.S. territory like in the Northern Mariana Islands or Guam. That way you can still live in China and function as an exporter/importer at the same time representing your own company. This can be easily arranged.
