How to start up my own Graphic/Web Design business?
-
Hi everyone. I want to start up my own Graphic/Web Design Business. I've been trying to find out what licenses I need, if I do need one, how I become my own business, what kinds of contracts I should draw up, etc. The whole process is confusing, so I thought I would come on here and see if someone could break down the process for me as best they could? My business will be run by just me, I will not be hiring anyone to work for me as I will not accept more projects than I think I can handle. I plan on working from home once I get a new computer (old one crashed). 1. What what kind of license would I need to run a business from home? 2. Should I apply to become an LLC or is that not an option/too much of a hassel for me? 3. While I'm starting up my business, I will continue to hold a job and not just rely on my business as my source of income. How will this affect my taxes, if at all? I would basically just be recognized as having two jobs, right? (continue reading below)

The best advice I can provide is to do this... contact somebody that is already doing what you want to do. I own 10 websites and they would not exist today if it were not for people like yourself to create them for me. I happened upon a small, start-up company called Ecommerce for Everyone. It's owned and operated by Genesis Font (his real name) their lead developer, and Alex Toth the lead graphics designer. Contact them - speak to Genesis. When you're just starting out you don't need to incorporate at first; just get a business license. But, as your business grows, and you start making, let's say $1000/month, then I would consider incorporating; it's much easier than you think. And, an LLC is the best way to go because you will have the option of running your LLC as a 'pass-thru entity'. This is a very convenient thing for you because it basically allows you to run your business as a sole proprietorship and pay your taxes on your regular tax return (1040 form) and a 1040c form. Read my blog if you need information about the step-by-step process of starting an e-commerce business. Good Luck to you, and let me know how it goes. And remember this; I currently own ten websites and I plan to have 10 more in the next year - there will be times I will need your services. Once you get your business up and running send me an invite. p.s. let Genesis and Alex know that I sent you. Russ Grimm
