What are some good ideas to starting a small business from scratch?
-
I recently moved back to the east coast after spending 20 years on the west coast (USA). In San Francisco I was a chef and made a good living. It is considered a profession there but where I moved to, it is more of a low paying job. If I am going to continue to stay where I am, I have to do something else. Any ideas on starting a small business? I do not have too much money to invest. Thanks, any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

Answer:
I would go with catering, personal chef or start a mobile gourmet food business. Since you were a chef it wouldn't make much sense starting a new career from scratch with no experience. Good luck.!

How about a home chef, people hire you to prepare food for dinner parties in their own homes, usually quite well off people, so you can charge quite an amount. Much more than the normal wage. Several very good chefs are doing it in Europe, making a bomb. Its a way to get paid much more, you can se the net, local papers and mags to advertise in. Good luck whatever you do

Have you considered a catering service? You could start off catering small parties or get togethers. You could also perhaps cater to fund raising events and the like. It was just something that hit my mind seeing that you are a chef. Perhaps you could start your own website to advertise your service and use google adsense or promote more things through your website. Perhaps have one business feeding another. For instance, Global Domains International offers a small business opportunity in which you promote websites. If you cater to fund raising events or organizations like boy scouts or police fraternities you could also advertise them having their own website. Catering would put you in contact with many people and give you an opportunity to talk with many people. Just an idea. Good luck! Oh, if you want to check out Global Domains International to perhaps get your own website or domain and look at their business model please visit http://www.imonline.ws and press the more information button. Best of luck to you!

The best businesses to start are usually related to an individual's background. But because your background is as a chef and you don't have much money to start, I'd suggest getting a job and researching and starting your own business in your spare time. While catering (what others have suggested) may indeed be a good business to start, you'll need to comply with safety and health regulations, plus it would be highly advisable to buy appropriate liability insurance. You'll also need time to learn how to market a catering business and build (in a still-slow economy) clientele. By taking a job for now, you'll have some money coming in while you do your research. You could launch whatever you do on a small scale and run it part-time until it can support you. Do find a local SCORE or Small Business Development office (both free services) to see how they can help you get started, and check out online websites like BusinessKnowHow.com for start-up information.
