  • Answer:

Yeah, you can. As long as you don't do anything illegal. You want to start officially so as to legally get rolling? It's called a "501 (c) 3 Non-profit organization. You establish it by filing papers at your state capital, with your state's Department Of State. Somewhere in the charter that you're going to draw up, you will specify the rate of compensation paid to the owner, and how and with what frequency it will be paid, and how any shortfalls will be eventually made up, in the event the till doesn't have enough to pay you one week or month. Prior to finalizing that, go and interview someone who started a non-profit. What is your time worth? You have to eat, too, you know!! $ 20,000 per year? A modest salary, to keep a roof over your head, to enable you to continue to carry out your mission? Even the human anatomy was designed like this: the heart has coronary arteries that draw off a tiny little bit of the oxygen supply for the heart's own use, so it can continue serving the rest of the body !! You'll find that fund-raising will be your biggest concern for a while. Not just doing the work. If you feel like funding it all out of your take-home pay from your job, or out of your savings account, you can do that, but why? Long-term, you'll burn yourself out. But start small. Develop a plan. Read some books on how these things got started in other areas of charity work. Most importantly, start LEGAL. Do it right on paper from day one, and what you put on paper, follow through and do it.

In the state of Iowa, becoming a non-profit is very simple and costs about $25 through the secretary of state's office. You would not have to be asking for money, but this way, people could write off their donation to you on their taxes as charity, even if it is just old clothes, which is sometimes the deciding factor for people.
