Where would I have to go to obtain a basic food hygiene certificate?

I was thinking of starting my own cake business from home, how do i do this?

  • I was thinking of making cakes at home then selling them at stalls and things like that and work my way up. I've been told your kitchen has to be inspected by the Environmental Health Dept and you need a Food Hygiene/Safety certificate, a knowledge of the up to date catering rules and regulations and labelling. Also If you intend to sell at a profit you have to register as self employed 28 days before starting to trade, as all income is taxable and you may need public liability Insurance if the food upsets someone. How do i go about getting my kitchen inspected, Food Hygiene/Safety certificate and get myself registered as self employed with public liability Insurance as you can tell Im really lost. Im only in my teens so this would be a great help

  • Answer:

Contact Environmental Health at your Council. They will arrange an Inspection, also tell you where you can do your Food hygiene certificate. For Insurance just phone up an Insurance Broker in your area - after your kitchen has been passed. You can register with HMRC as self employed up to 3 months after beginning trading. Just make sure you keep all receipts, outgoings and income. If youwant to sell at markets etc you should contact the Council, you might need a licence from them. EHO first, if they do not pass your kitchen then it's a non starter. UK

your local council can arrange for your home and kitchen to be inspected and they will be the ones to issue the certificates you need but it wont come cheap ! you will need to have equipment to theyre specification and refirgeration etc ! your going to have to pay out a fair bit before this happens ...

Business License, Board of Health Certificate, liability insurance and zoning variance. It is illegal to sell food without those.

Reference the self-employed part of your question: You are not able to register before you start trading, however it is a good idea to register as soon after you start trading as you can, as National Insurance payments will be due from your start date. If you were to start your business today, then this falls in the 2011/12 tax year, so you have until 05 October 2012 to register your business (remember this is the last possible date to avoid a fine). All income is not necessarily taxable as you will still be entitled to the Personal Allowance of £7475 currently. I am assuming you have a National Insurance number. Take a look at the Revenue's website to find out how to register. You can do so by post, online or by phone. You will also need to register for National Insurance payments (these are currently £2.50 a week, payable either monthly or 6-monthly). Simply go to HMRC and click on Starting A Business (it's in the Businesses & Corporations section on the homepage). The Business Link website has a huge amount of information about starting your own business. Just click on Starting Up on the left-hand menu of the homepage. You may like to consider using a bookkeeper if you are not going to do your own accounts and tax returns. A bookkeeper is often a lot cheaper than using a firm of accountants. Good luck with your new business.
