Should i be a graphic designer or a web designer?

What are the long term career prospects for a web designer/graphic designer ? Can I design till I'm 50 ?

  • I'm 27 years old now and I'm doing my own business, as a freelance web designer / graphic designer. I just do html sites, no backend programming stuff. I'm just wondering if I can carry on doing this until I'm 40 at least. What if 10 years later, no one uses internet anymore and nobody needs websites ? Any suggestions on what to do ? Maybe invest or start teaching or draw cartoons ?

Dont worry the internet will be around a long time. Magazines are gradually starting to publish their books online, everything will be based online. They will always need someone to design interfaces and of course ads. What you need to do to stay on top of your game is keep up with the latest technologies- software- it would be nice if you learn some programming too. Also be prepared for competition, kids on myspace are learning the ways of the web! lol :) (but that will never replace a good design eye.) good luck- Im 26 yrs old -been doing it for 4 years and cant keep up with my work load.

The internet is only a fad. Just kidding! Keep your eye on content delivery. It's not just about design anymore. The convergence of broadcast and online, streaming audio and video, Flash, Ajax and a host of web-based apps are making the online experience richer and more engaging. Continuous improvement and lifelong learning. You can work until you're 80 if you have the fire in your heart.
