Is creating ebay layouts and selling them online legal?

Creating a business on ebay?

  • I'm a private seller on ebay and for the last year near enough I've been selling my old things I no longer want and making good money on ebay. Now that I've got the hang of selling I'm considering becoming what ebay regard as a 'business' ie. buying goods and reselling them. I'm 19 and a full time university student and have been job hunting for 2 1/2 years with very limited luck! So this will hopefully be a great way to make a little bit of money. I'm a bit confused regarding the legal side of this. Do I need to declare myself as self-employed with HMRC? Will I have to pay capital gains tax from my profits? I'm not expecting to make a huge business with a massive turnover, but simply make a little bit of profit on each item and wait for it to all add up. Thanks for the help.

Yes, you will have to declare yourself self-employed, eventually! You have a 3 month window where you can sell, but after this period, if you are still selling, you will need to declare yourself self-employed. You can do this by visiting http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/startingup/ If you want to be able to list more than 3 items a month, I suggest that you change your account status to business on eBay, then contact them asking to increase your sellers allowance. They should increase it to 100 x items a month. I recently wrote an eBook about making money on eBay, which, so far, is proving to be quite successful! In the eBook, I explain where you can buy products from and provide you with examples where people are selling them on eBay. I also offer a bonus where each Friday, I will email you (Free of charge!) new products you can sell on eBay and show you where to get them from!

It's a nice idea - but you haven't worked out the details of what you are going to do - I think you are allowed a little leeway whilst you try it out and see if it's feasible. It wouldn't be a good idea to get HRMC interested in you before you are sure you have an idea which is yielding results. Have a go and see how you get on first

There is an earnings threshold of about 5-7.5k ( i forget as i have not looked for a long time). But basically they will find you if they feel you are earning that much. I wouldn't worry about it till you get to that point. Can you not just make more ebay accounts? I'm sure both ebay and HMRC has more info.

For most occasional sellers on eBay, there is no need to move beyond the standard auction format. However, if you have a lot of inventory to sell, or you want an easy way to create an online presence, opening an eBay store may be the right choice for you. The good thing about eBay stores is the insertion fee is only 5 to 10 cents, regardless of the starting price. The gallery image listing upgrade is only an additional 1 cent. Multiple quantities can be listed for a single insertion fee. While the eBay store insertion fee is cheap when compared to auctions, the final value fee is almost double the cost of auctions. I think this idea will serve you right. Good luck
