Online book selling advice. How best to sell in the UK? Amazon and alternatives?
-
Hi I have a few used books I would like to sell. Ive never sold on Amazon before and I have to admit as a newbie I was a little shocked by how hefty their fees seem to be. Rather than bemoaning Amazon though can any experienced UK book sellers help me out with some simple questions. Do any of the alternatives to amazon eg alibris, play, price minister, ebay, abebooks offer anything like the rate of sales that amazon does ie if I put my books on one of them will they just be sitting there for years unsold? Are there any forums for UK people who sell books across a number of sites to discuss online book selling generally? I know strictly speaking Im cheating and thats 2 questions but in my own mind Im justifying it on the grounds that they are both aspects of the question how best to sell books online in the UK ;P Thnx for your assistance

Answer:
When it comes to eBay and the like, there is typically a up-front fee and a LOT of book auctions on eBay expire with 0 bids ... Amazon allows you to put your stock up 'for free' and it remains 'on offer' until you remove it .. so there's SOME chance your books WILL sell eventually .. Note that Amazon is very 'marginal' for anything heavy (hardback books, text books, manuals etc) .. they allow £2.50 postage .. since you are required to send 'signed for', anything over 2kg has to be 1st class & will cost you about £5 to post. So after adding postage costs into your selling price, you will only be able to offer 'out of print' & a few specialist hardbacks (for example, Microsoft books) cheaper than Amazon itself ..
