Government Grants.. How does one go about applying for one? Have you gotten one? How did you apply?
-
After spending several hours on the net (http://www.grants.gov/) and flipping throught books (Lesko, Sheryl Lindsell-Roberts,Harriet Grayson) I would like to know of first hand attempts and sucesses in Government Grant writting. Have you ever applied for or written a request for a Government Grant and were you approved? If no (not approved), what do you think you did wrong? If yes, how soon after approval did you get your funds and how much of a "big brother" has the granting agency been?

Answer:
I have gotten federal and private foundation grants -- but not for myself or for starting a business, but for non-profits that I was helping. The last was a $500,000 grant to develop and market a social science database that is now online. For my business, I got a $10,000 grant to conduct seminars on how to start a business to low income residents. The grant monies were for supplies, venue and such. It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK - lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born. Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture. Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business. Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html... "The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments." Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business -- THERE'S NONE. http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

It depends on what the grant is for. I know that it is easier to get a grant if you have a sponsor. (getting under the wing of a group that already receives grants) at least this is true in the non-profit world...

I have researched grants (ALLOT) to start a horse rescue to involve at risk teens. There are allot of hoops, its not hard as long as you follow every step in the paperwork process. It all depends on what kind of grant you are looking for, there are so many at the state level and the national level. Its a long process and you need to make sure you have all your paperwork in the loop prior to the deadlines. If you are planning to be non-profit, you can file for that status in your state before you get a grant. This gives you some recognition within your state and it's out of the way. You can then apply for grants etc. The toughest decision will be deciding the structure of your entity, like board members (if 501C) or if you're LLC etc. and who you trust to be involved, you cannot have family members on your board, that is a show stopper and can add 3+ months to the wait. I recommend finding posting an ad for someone on Craigslist under the "volunteer" section to help write the grant, you can trade services ect. and find someone who is experienced. You can also take a class in grant writing at a community college and Amazon has some great step-by-step books on grant writing & fund raising. Good luck!

Don't buy grant seeking software, because they are all a ripoff. They provide you with just enough to be legal. Go to you local Small Business Administration. They will assist you in locating any grants you quailfy for. They are a great help in many ways for small business people. Everything is also extremely confidential. Good Luck.
