How do I get my business started?

How do I get my business started?

  • I want to start an online business selling candles, soaps and other crafts. How do I get started? Is there a website with tips and starter ideas? What about patents? Should I go to business school? Tell me all I need to know. I want to make this my career, so I must do well at it. I would appreciate help from anyone, but I would prefer help from people that have become successful in doing the same thing. Thank you.

I recommend that you get online and do a google search for "start small business Arizona" or wherever you live. You will need to get a business licence and register your business name through your local State agency - I live in Canada, so I don't know exactly the process in the USA. Then go to a site like www.entrepreneur.com or google search "start a small business" to find another resource for tips on getting started. Good luck!

I can't tell you that I've tried selling anything other than info products online, but there are online business fundamentals that anyone with any kind of online business needs to know and it sounds like you could use that type of education. This resource helped me accelerate my online business education. See site source. It offers a f*r*e*e ebook to create your first website and a complete 26-video training course (also at no charge) on building your online business step-by-step in full detail. You can definitely use it to get started. Good luck!

If it were me, I would sign up as an independent distributor marketing products for a good company that already makes quality candles and soaps and uses independent distributors to market them. They already have the business and manufacturing licenses, they have liability insurance, they have experimented and created a quality product, they have some name brand recognition and customers who like their products, they have marketing materials (catalogs, brochures, etc.), they have a website, etc. You can spend all of your time learning marketing/selling skills which is where you earn the income. (You only spend money producing a product. You don't make any income until you actually sell it!) By starting out this way, you will learn about the industry, get on the job training while earning income as you learn. After a couple of years if you still think there are enough hours in the day to get all of the proper permits and licenses, obtain legal advice and liability insurance, develop and make quality products, marketing materials AND still have time to market the products to get some sales, you will have some experience and a better idea of what you need to do and can go for it!
