How to assign appropriate project number for different product design project?

I'm running a small industrial design company, with lots of old and new projects now, I need to re-organize all those projects with a systematic project number system, is there any standard method to do that?
Answer:

I do not know of any standard system but i do recommend putting them in an order of importance like NEW1, NEW2, and OLD1,OLD2 this way you can work on old and NEW projects simultaneously

We have a relatively simple method that has worked for us pretty well. 3 digit client number then a 2 digit project number. sample: 410-08 It is a relatively standard system. If you have fewer clients with more projects you can increase the second set to 3 digits. Good Luck!
