How can I submit an invention idea?

I have an idea for another section to a popular website. How do I submit and protect my idea?

  • I have an amazing idea for another section or division of Yelp, the online review website. I think adding this section to the site would generate TONS of activity. I would love if they had this division right now and I know there are millions of others who would, too! I want to submit my idea, but how do I go about it where I could possibly be paid for my idea? I know you can patent things, mail things to yourself, etc... and usually that's for a tangible invention. This is just an idea for a website... So, I'm afraid if I submit the idea, they will take it and say that they were already working on it before my submission - which is usually a lie. And how could I honestly prove that they weren't? So there's my dilemma. Any thoughts?

  • Answer:

    1. Just become you think it is an amazing idea, does not mean Yelp will think so. 2. There is no way to protect an idea which is simply an addition or enhancement to an existing concept, since you would most likely never be able to prove that you actually came up with the idea before the original designers did. 3. If you are convinced that your idea does warrant further investigation (and expense on your part), I would advise you to contact a lawyer who specializes in patents/trademarks/copyrights. And if you are of legal age, you may even get an initial consultation for free.
