How do you trade mark a name of a business?

Do you like this business name? Opinions are welcome?

  • What do you think of this business name: Via United (via_united) I will be selling electronics (and some new designer clothes) Does it sound professional? Is it more girly or manly? Do you like it, why or why not? FOR BEST ANSWER: FIND OUT IF IT IS A TRADE MARK OR NOT Thanks

  • Answer:

Here's a few things to keep in mind: 1) Keep your industry, your clients/customers, your advertising plan in mind. 2) The more unique & distinctive a name, the higher the chances that the name is legally available for use. And the higher the chances of obtaining the trademark. 3) Think of your business as having a personality. What kind of image do you want your business to portray? Specific brainstorming tips: Think about what you want but more importantly, think about what you DON'T want. If you don't want a 3-word name, don't bother with those. If you don't want non-English words, don't bother with those & so on and so forth. What are the "types" of names you like? Think about words in their simple forms, e.g. adjectives, Latin roots, mythological names, etc. Compile a listing of the types & then seek out resources, such as books or sites, which specialize in those types. I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there. Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first. Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up. Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I don't care for it, it doesn't let anyone know what your business is. It makes no sense!

wish I were

I like it for an electronics company, but I'm not so sure if it really fits toe sell clothing. It definately sounds professional (for electronics) It's neither girly or manly. I fell it fits both. Again, I like it for electronics, but not for clothing.

I personally don't like it . .

Rainy

I like it. Also, just VIA would be cool.

WinterBorn

It gives no clue as to what you do. It is just a name (try entering it in your search line to see if you get another by that name).

The title as it is doesn't say what your company is or does. Via United Electronics would work. You'd also get the cool acronym V.U.E. which you could play on in your advertising. You don't want to combine the two businesses under one business structure because selling electronics and selling clothes require different business acumen, have different markets, etc. You want to be very clear in your mission for each company.

I dont like it because it doesn't give me any idea as to what the company is doing. Now, if you were naming it after yourself, or if the VIA was an acronym, then that's a different kettle. This just doesn't stand out in my mind. If you're thinking marketing and this iwll be in a phone book, then you'll want something towards the top of the list, like Aardvark Electronics... Two A's together would put you twards the top. AND, don't do Alpha... everyone does alpha. Anyway, my two bits.

it's a little strange to be selling electronics with designer clothes? weird combo. The name fits well with the elec. part but i don't see it fitting the designer clothes.

Rachel

I like it but there is already a Via Technologies Inc: http://www.via.com.tw/en/index.jsp
