Should companies be fined for offshoring our jobs?
-
I'm tired of all of our good jobs going to India because the U.S. is too expensive. Somehow I just don't think this is fair.

Answer:
Not fined, exactly, but taxed for each off shore position, and required to have a certain percentage of all jobs within all classifications on shore, or fined. This can be done--all a state or the fed need do is condition incorporation on these requirements...otherwise, they can incorporate overseas somewhere. I agree with you 100%. I am also tired of trying to deal with foreign people who don't speak English well enough to give me decent customer service and who have been put through courses to "sound American." For those of you above saying things like "you should ask yourself why the US is so expensive that it is pushing jobs overseas." You should realize we are expensive because we don't employ children and others to do dangerous jobs at slave wages, we have labor protections for our employees, require that employers contribute to our retirement...in short because we have a network (albeit with big holes and a patchwork at that) that tries to take care of its workers. By letting those jobs go overseas, you let corporations reap huge profits by paying little for labor and doing nothing to better labor's condition. And, those railing about labor unions here--labor union membership has been steadily falling for 25 years and a small percentage of labor in this country is unionized.

Offshoring? is that a word? anyway, you should ask yourself why the US is so expensive. could it be unions? or minimum wage requirements? is that fair?

it's a free country. why don't you start your own company and see how great things go for you? yeah, it would be better if they didn't offshore. But like I said, it's a free country.

Anything to make offshoring more expensive will help bring more jobs back to the U.S. However, those costs will need to be borne by someone, and if you believe that the corporations will just eat those expenses then you are sorely mistaken. As long as U.S. consumers are obsessed with paying less to get more then corporations need to save money. People want cheap computers and free tech support. Would you be willing to buy a more expensive PC and pay for support as long as you are guaranteed to talk to someone in the United States when you need help?

I think that they should have to pay a fee to take business over seas unless the company was over seas and they purchased it while still in business and they keep it there.

Oh I definitely think so! I think our jobs should stay here. If Americans would quit buying foreign cars and anything made in another country our jobs would start staying here a lot more.

Yes. Unless the foreign labor pool provides a service that cannot be sourced at home. America is faltering because the need for skilled labor is diminished. We are left with the low paying unskilled work that noone wants to do anyway. To move up into the middle class, you have to be able to secure a job that will keep you there.

No. Companies should not be fined for offshoring jobs. Protectionism will only stifle the economy and preserve industries and occupations at which America is at a competitive disadvantage. In the 1970s and 1980s Japanese companies were damned for making cheaper products. Now companies such as Toyota, Honda, Sony, Matsushita are major employers of Americans. If you're unhappy about the effects of globalization, you can make a statement by purchasing products and services that originate in the US. But I hope you have a fat wallet.

What violation are you going to fine them for? There is nothing illegal about a company operating in the most cost effective manner they can. This is our governments fault, not the companies.
