Can wearing Deodorant Give you Cancer?
-
My Dad thinks that if a 13 year old boy uses roll-on deodorant, he will get cancer, is this true?

Answer:
No link between cancer and deodorants/anti-perspirants has been proven, and all the evidence strongly suggests there isn't one. The currently widely-held belief that they are linked to breast cancer is mainly down to a hoax email A large study in 2002 looked for links between antiperspirant use and breast cancer in 1,500 women. The researchers found that neither antiperspirants nor deodorants increased breast cancer risk. These links give some facts: http://www.breastcancer.org/risk/myths/antipersp.jsp http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cancer-causes/CA00085 http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=3943 Those who claim that deodorants/antiperspirants cause breast cancer state one of these three things as the reason: 1) they contain aluminium; many do but there is no strong evidence that aluminium could increase the risk of cancer 2) 'anti-perspirants prevent the release of toxins, which cause cancer'; this is nonsense - the purpose of sweat is to cool you down, not release 'toxins', and even if sweat did release toxins, there are plenty of other areas you sweat profusely from. 3) they contain parabens, a preservative many believe is linked to breast cancer. - There is in fact no evidence that parabens cause cancer; the concern arises from a small study in 2004 by British researchers which found traces of parabens in tissue taken from women with breast cancer. The tumours of 20 women were tested, and for obvious reasons there was no control group. The researchers claimed the study demonstrated that if people are exposed to parabens , the chemicals will accumulate in their bodies However, this extremely small study doesn't demonstrate a direct causal link between deodorant or antiperspirant use and developing breast cancer. A study that small cannot be regarded as proof. There are many deodorants available without parabens and aluminium, and many people choose to use them to be on the safe side - I do myself, and did long before my breast cancer diagnosis - but there is no proof of a link with breast cancer or with any other cancer

Yes you can get cancer from deodorant... is your dad father into holistic medicine... I agree with your father on this one sorry, I haven't worn deodorant much seen I started to have the need.. just tried to stay clean bacterial wise.. because that is where the smell comes from mixed with the sweating.. and have also tried the holistic deodorants w/o the ingredients that cause it and they also make a deodorant stone that works for some.. Your father isn't crazy... he is more of a radical out of the box person.. that is def. a cool and intelligent thing in my eyes ;)
ehm... yup
No, it's not true. The people here that say it is, are either kooks or have something to sell you. After the deodorant they sell you, they will want to talk to you about a bridge in New York and some water front condos on Phoenix.

There is a slim chance the ANTIPERSPIRANT can cause it, not deodorant. Deodorant is just perfume for your pits. Antiperspirant uses aluminum chloride to block the pores. The aluminum chloride is then believed to be absorbed into the bloodstream and deposited in the brain.

Unfortunately there was flawed research some years ago that started this story. Best advice you can get is to go to the website of a major cancer charity (they are listed under www.after-cancer.com/contacts). There is also information about 'Chinese whispers' etc. A lot of adverse info on the web comes from companies trying to sell you something. Use your head, and think that IF some ingredients really caused cancer, would any manufacturer selling into the US, UK or other major market risk being sued? Sadly many doctors have listened to flawed research. As a cancer patient I was horrified at the mis-information so-called top doctors in cancer hospitals in UK told me. So I consulted doctors in France, USA, Germany etc. where they are more up-to-date. Good luck - and perhaps you could buy a deodorant that looks different and fool your father?!! Verite R

Yes! There are cancer causing chemicals in a LOT of deodorants! I'm in the health field and I've been trying to find a natural deodorant to get away from this crap. The big cancer causing agent is the aluminum, found in all antiperspirants. So if you are going to go with a big name deodorant, at least go with one that isn't an antiperspirant. This is the deodorant that I'm waiting for in the mail if you want your dad to take a look at it: http://www.amazon.com/Thai-Crystal-Deodorant-Mist-Hypo-allergenic/dp/B000B969B4/ Once I start using it I'll be able to tell people if it works or not. I've tried the all natural "Tom's of Maine" deodorant and that would only work for about 2 hours each time I'd apply it. Then my armpits started itching so I wouldn't recommend it.

there have been alot of studies about deodorant and breast cancer. It was originally started because of the talc in powder. No conclusive studies showed anything.
