How long does a coma after chemo last?

  • My friend age 40, had kidney cancer, after many surgeries and chemo "no cancer cells detected" they found his pain was from perferated bowel. Followed by surgeries to repair his other intestines, he finally was taken off all machines and was feeling better other than major pain from muscle atrophy..very weak and under 90 lbs he slipped into a coma.....how long does a coma last? Is it possible that his body is healing itself while in a coma? This was the fifth time dr's said "make final arrangements".........he felt healthy when it all began with what he thought was a pulled muscle in his lower back.....to go in and be diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer....he was diagnosed the beginning of last january 2010, has been hospitalized since feb 14, 2010.....How long does a coma last.....and can his body be healing itself while in this coma? He has now been in a coma for 90 days...

    Most comas last no longer than four weeks. Some people in a coma shift to a persistent vegetative state. Body doesn't heal by itself in coma that's why people passes away. If they would have been healing by itself then people should recover from coma. Usually it is not so.

If he has stage 4 kidney cancer he likely will not come out of the coma and will not survive much longer.

It sounds like your friend got a lot of complications from his disease. By the way you are telling the story, he was affected most likely by sepsis. He could be in coma because of many causes, and its impossible to tell how long he will remain like that. While his body can heal while he is in a coma, it is more likely that this will debilitate him more, since he will likely be receiving parenteral nutrition and also by all the interventions needed. By the condition you are describing he is most likely in an ICU and you should ask his family to ask his doctors about his prognosis and the causes that put him in coma in the first place.
