Deodorant and cancer?

Does antiperspirant deodorant really cause breast cancer?

  • During P.E., my friend saw my deodorant stick and saw that it was antiperspirant, and she said that I was going to get breast cancer from it. Is this true? And even if it is, I don't think that it would absolutely mean that I would have to get breast cancer from using it. Thanks!

  • Answer:

No, people used to think it caused problems because it stops you from sweating, but you have thousands of pores you can sweat out of. A more likely issue is the possibility of Alzheimer's due to aluminium content, so I would still consider switching (at least for the days you don't have to sweat much)

It is possible from any kind of deodorant with metals that you can get breast cancer. When you use deodorant, you're rubbing metals on your armpits. Your armpits have sweat glands that open and let out sweat. The deo is then absorbped into your glands, which happen to be near lymph nodes which are near your breasts. This is not the only way to get breast cancer. It is based on your family history and genetics as well. It's not limited to just antiperperants either, like your friend suggested. Any kind of conventional deo will have alumnium in it. read the labels on the back. A good way around this is to use alternatives...I like Tom's of Maine, personally. Everything is lightly scented, they boast using no metals, and their packaging is recyclable. I used to sweat a lot. So much that I turned to the extreme deodorant. $8 or more for secret extra strength stuff. The more i used it the more i sweat.... and not small amounts. i could wear 2 shirts and have a huge stain through BOTH. I switched to Tom's of Maine, and after a week or so i noticed I sweatted less. :) These days you can find it at stores like Target.

No reputable agency considers this a risk factor. Some studies have shown the chemicals in tumors but there is no causal link, they are in non-cancerous tissue too.

There have been some studies that have shown the aluminum chlorohydrate in antiperspirant may contribute to breast cancer.
