Is skin cancer hereditary?

Is lip cancer considered oral cancer or skin cancer? What med specialty treats it best?

  • Is lip cancer considered oral cancer or skin cancer? What med specialty treats it best? I have a lesion on my lip and have already had a basal cell skin cancer near my eye removed last month. The insurance companies are passing the buck and can't agree if my lip is considered oral or skin and who should treat it. So, is it oral cancer or skin cancer and who should treat it? It is in the middle (red part) of my lower lip. Thanks.

  • Answer:

I am not sure why it matters, but if the cancer is of the vermilion it is considered an oral cancer, otherwise it is a skin cancer. What you typed from the path report does say it is benign it just doesn’t use the word benign. If your doctor felt a biopsy was medically necessary your insurance should pay for it. The doctor who did the biopsy should be able to refer to the correct physician to treat it.

Lip cancer considered a oral cancer. It is best treated by faciomaxillary oncosurgeon or oral surgeons. This report is not suggestive of cancer. It is more of early dysplasia. But lesion has to be removed by Expert in either case.

Until it is biopsied, no -one can be sure ot the pathology. I would be getting it removed by the Dr who treated your basal cell and escallating to an oncologist if the pathology results justify this.

You would think your doctor would know and the results would be referred to your insurance company. What would it matter? Are they not going to pay if it's not basal? That makes no sense either. If it's very similar to the cancer you had removed, then it's in all likelihood basal. If it's a growing tumor under your skin, then it's probably oral cancer, if you don't have it spreading from a primary location and just don't know it yet. Go to a dermatologist and they'll tell you. My cancer treatment cost a buttload and there was never any concern with my insurance not wanting to pay..If it's scan or biopsy related, then insurance coordinator for dr should send preauthorization request to insurance company and it'll be approved.
