Is it a high 'red blood cell' count or 'white blood cell' count which can mean cancer?
-
Basically I had a UI. The doctor said, yes, there was blood, and a high percentage of white blood cells in my urine. I was relieved- I have always been led to believe it is a high RED blood cell percentage which causes cancer. But when I told my friend she said high percentages of both white and red are symptoms of cancer. She specifically mentioned leukaemia. Is this true? I thought it was just red.

Answer:
White cells in the urine most often suggest infection. Leukaemia does NOT of course result in white cells in the urine. You friend is an ***.

Leukemia is a type of cancer which is characterized by an increase in white blood cells in the body. Increased white blood cells in the urine is usually an indicator of a urinary infection and not cancer.

Cancer could be any tissue, so presumably you could have a cancer causing a high red blood cell count, but I've never heard of that happening. Leukaemia is cancer of the white blood cells (leukocytes) - the name means "white blood", but as another person answered, leukaemia is not the only thing that causes a high white blood cell count, usually it will just be your body producing more white blood cells, which are your immune cells, to fight off an infection. So don't worry, your body is just doing what it is supposed to do.

I believe you would want a CBC before making that assumption. Elevated white blood cell count would go along with the infection because the human body produces white blood cells to fight infection. Red blood cells carry oxygen. An extreme irritation may have blood in urine. You should ask your doctor to be certain though and of course get a second opinion. If you feel for some reason it is more than just a UI you should get the blood tests done properly and not make an assumption.

WBC are what the body uses to fight infections. Having a high WBC count means that your body is fighting an infection. May be cancer , but most like just a bacterial or viral infection. RBC are what we need to carry oxygen to the cells in the body. usually a high count may be caused from being at a high elevation where the air is thinner. either way if the DR did not say you have cancer then don't worry about it.

It's high count of white blood cell that causes cancer (Leukemia). "A consistently high number of white blood cells is a symptom of Leukemia, a cancer of the blood. A Leukemia patient may have as many as 50,000 white blood cells in a single drop of blood."
