Answer:
There are a variety of nurses that might work with pediatric cancer - different types of nurses fill different roles. One nurse experienced with oncology might supervise RNs and LPNs that perform functions other than administering chemotherapy. Nurses usually get certified in specialties after they get their nursing degree and have already been on the job. Sometimes hospitals pay for these certifications. Most certification programs require professional experience in the specialty area. It is seldom practical to get the necessary experience without already working as a nurse, but a nursing student can take all the necessary classes for certification while they are working on their nursing degree, and then get the clinical experience after they graduate. Its also relatively easy for a licensed nurse to get certification in oncology, pediatrics or both by taking a few extra classes after they start working, provided there is a nursing school nearby.

At my hospital, all of the inpatient pediatric nurses become "chemo certified." They take classes regularly to keep up to date so that they are able to administer chemotherapy. A new nurse on our floor is not able to care for a patient on chemo until she or he passes the class and becomes chemo certified. The outpatient pediatric oncology nurse practitioners run the classes.
