What is the polycythemia vera life expectancy?

I am trying to find out the life expectancy of people with Polycythemia Vera.?

  • Does anyone know the answer or know where I can find it. Thank you so much.

  • Answer:

Treatment does not cure polycythemia vera, but it does control it and can decrease the likelihood of complications, such as the formation of blood clots. The aim of treatment is to decrease the number of red blood cells. Usually, blood is removed from the body in a procedure called phlebotomy, similar to the way blood is removed when donating blood. A pint of blood is removed every other day until the hematocrit reaches a normal level, which is then maintained by removing blood every few months, as needed. Without treatment, about half of the people who have polycythemia vera with symptoms die in less than 2 years. With treatment, they live an average of 15 to 20 years.

I've never heard of that kind of cancer, but here's a site that will help you. Type in that name in the search field, and it will tell you anything that you need to know, provided that it has been submitted (it's a popular site. You'll find something). You can also google it. It says, though, that life expectancy is two years or less without treatment. Good luck to you.
