There are different causes of lung cancer, smoking is just an added risk. But second hands smoke, environmental factors, chemical exposure either at jobs or home, and heredity have as much influence on lung cancer. Also diet, and the chemicals you're exposed to via produce and other food items.

The most common cause of lung cancer is exposure to tobacco smoke. The occurrence of lung cancer in non-smokers, who account for fewer than 10% of cases, appears to be due to a combination of genetic factors. Radon gas- a breakdown product of naturally occurring radium and uranium, asbestos (in construction and demolition workers, pipefitters, shipbuilders, and automotive mechanics), arsenic (in workers in copper smelting, pesticide manufacturing, and wood-treatment plants) and air pollution may also contribute to lung cancer. The following may also increase one's risk of lung cancer: * Passive (secondhand) smoking. * High levels of arsenic in drinking water * Radiation therapy to the lungs * Exposure to cancer-causing chemicals such as uranium, beryllium, vinyl chloride, nickel (in battery and stainless steel manufacturing plants, chromates (in stainless steel and pigment manufacturing plants), coal products, mustard gas, chloromethyl ethers, beryllium; and coke oven emissions (in steel workers), gasoline, and diesel exhaust accounts for a small number of cases per year Lung cancer that begins in the lungs (primary lung cancer) is uncommon in nonsmokers, but cancer of the breast, colon, prostate, testicle, kidney, thyroid, bone or other organs may spread to the lungs. In that case, the cancer is still referred to by the name of the organ in which it originated, rather than being called lung cancer. There's no connection between smoking and the spread of cancer cells to the lungs from other parts of the body. Please see the web pages for more details on Lung carcinoma.

Non smokers can develop lung cancer through a variety of ways: 1) Exposure to second hand smoke (smoke that dos not pass through the filter) have an increased chance of developing cancer 2) Pollution like those coming from vehicles 3) Chemical exposure (ex. asbestos has been linked to the development of a lung malignancy called mesothelioma) 4) Radiation exposure
