How can I start a non-profit organization?

How can I start a cancer organization?

  • My baby cousin Ireland was diagnosed with Wilms Disease when she was only 6 months old. Wilms disease is a kidney cancer found in young children. I want to start an organization so I can help raise money and find out what is causing this horrible disease. There have been 9 children in and around the area she is living in that have had Wilms Disease within the last 4 years. Wilms Disease is supposed to be RARE. There is something causing this and I want to figure out what it is. With fundraising and starting this organization I know I can do it, I wont give up. I know starting an organization costs a lot of money and time....but this is for my family and for other families. Children shouldn't have to go through their childhood with cancer, they should be able to be kids! This is all new to me and I dont know how to start. But I know I will have a lot of support with this so please don't tell me I cant do it. How can I start this organization? And what are some ideas so that it can be successful? Thank you for your help!

  • Answer:

You can do it. There are many great facebook fan pages about breast cancer. I recommend you start with a fan page on facebook (or any other social network sites). This will really give you a fan base and will be a good start. Then you will have to ask on how start such an organization in your country. I really think it is a good noble idea and i will be very pleased to participate in it. My profile contains my fan page, please contact me if you need help God bless you.

Form an LLC corporation first. Then get a non-profit status. This will allow you to rasie funds and they can be tax-deductible to people who provide funding. The whole thing costs abotu $1000 to set up. Then start finding ways to raise money. Golf tournaments, bake sales, raffles and auctions, etc.

Talk to the Irish Cancer society. Going it alone can be expensive and time consuming. It's not just the huge cost but the 24/7/365 commitment.
