What is a bone scan?

What is a bone scan and how to pay for it?

  • Answer:

It's a test using radioactive dye injected into the vein. Radiation will collect in the bones and a camera will scan the area. A radiologist will later read the scans to look for any abnormalities such as a tumor, infection, or broken bone. Medline Plus: Bone Scan http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003833.htm As for cost, it probably would depend on what type of bone scan was done . . some take a little longer than others (three phase bone scan). But, the average cost would be between $500 to $1000. It may also depend on which hospital or clinic you go to as far as cost. It may vary considerably. If you have insurance they usually will cover all of it with maybe a small co-pay. Go ahead and get the scan and than if you do not have insurance you can set up a payment plan with the hospital or clinic.
