What's the best way to get oneself an appointment with a health specialist the soonest possible?

• Someone in my family was just told she has to be seen by a neurosurgeon as soon as possible, but nonetheless every specialist is usually already heavily booked and cannot give an appointment any sooner than a month from the current date. I need to know if there is any way of convincing the specialist´s receptionist, or the specialist him or herself, that the case is urgent and should be looked into with the utmost urgency. Thanks.

  At any of the doctor's offices you called, you can ask to be put on a stand-by list in case they have cancellations... Neurosurgeons are busy people and there are vanishingly few of them, as litiginous bastardry has forced them out of the business.
