What Is Speedy Catheter For?

What is a grosjean catheter? Procedure, uses, pictures, etc. would be great.?

  • I read about Lance Armstrong getting a grosjean catheter implanted in his chest when he started chemotherapy. I'm just interested in how this catheter differs from others, and what its special uses are. Pictures would be excellent!

  • Answer:

http://www.bardaccess.com/nurse-grosh-picc.php - the catheter that Lance Armstrong has was a "Groshong" catheter - the link above will take you to the site that has a picture on it. It is a little less sturdy than the Hickman catheter, but it can be used as a "pic" line - these are "peripheral" lines, meaning that they can be inserted through the arm as well as "centrally" - in the chest. Hickman catheters work best if put in through the chest - they last longer than Groshong catheters. I have treated patients with both Hickman and Groshong catheters, and if a patient has to have long-term infusion treatment with blood products (like patients with leukemia), I think that the Hickman is preferable. For chemotherapy like the kind Lance Armstrong had, either one is good. I hope this information helps.

a groshong catheter is like a very long IV (sort of) usually inserted just above the inner aspect of your arm the other side of your elbow that catheter is threaded through the vein to will it eventually goes into a larger vein. The groshong can have one to two lumens where medicines can be given or blood work taken they can stay in place for several months the dressings need to be changed once a week usually with a clear dressing so that you can monitor the insertion site for signs and symptoms of infection if infection develops it will have to come out. I am a home care nurse and I teach families and patients how to administer medications and flushes ( to keep the lumens open) how to manage their groshongs all the time. There are other catheters out there and these are uasually called PICC lines even Groshongs PICC stands for peripherally inserted catheter
