What are the early symptoms of breast cancer?

  • i am 18 and i have been having intermittent pain in my breasts for quite sometime now.i am afraid it may be something serious.can you please let me know all the causes, symptoms and diagnostic techniques for breast cancer? thanks a lot

  • Answer:

The chances of your having breast cancer at age 18 are almost none. However, pain is a way of your body letting you know that something is wrong. While breast cancer risks are low for you, the chances of your having a cyst or some type of infection are higher. Make an appointment with your family doctor and get yourself checked out. The doctor will most likely perform a clinical exam (feel with hands), so if you have a male doctor and are uncomfortable with that, then get a referral to a female doctor. The doctor will also get a complete medical history regarding family medical problems, your menstrual history, etc. If the doctor feels something that needs further follow-up, the first thing they will do is most likely an ultrasound. This is painless and in the US, is often done in a doctor's office. Ultrasounds are quite adept at identifying liquid filled cysts that are easily aspirated (drained). The main thing is to not be "so afraid" that you don't do anything. Get checked out! Let a medical professional do the diagnosis. For more information about breast cancer, please see http://www.breastcancer.org Questioner, the following is not for you. It is for the others who have answered this question. Yes, it's true that early stage breast cancer doesn't have pain. However, one doesn't always get diagnosed in early stages. Mammograms are not infallible. I have always had clear mammograms and clear ultrasounds. When a new lump (a sizable one at that) showed up in October 2011 and caused pain, I could have been like all of you and said, "Oh, no big deal. This can't be cancer. It hurts!" However, I followed up on it like I should have and was diagnosed with Stage IIIb breast cancer on February 4, 2012. Please . . . don't say, "Breast cancer doesn't hurt" because it can and it does! I went from nothing in July to where I am now . . . and I followed all the "rules" in caring for myself. Even now . . . with a 5cm+ lesion, the mammogram is inconclusive. I don't have a grapefruit size lump in me . . . it's a small core with a fissure like spread . . . similar to a chrysanthemum. Your words of advice to anyone complaining of breast pain should be, "Get yourself checked out."

Intermittent pain in both breasts is not a symptom of breast cancer. There is no pain in early stages of breast cancer. Most often breast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit. You or your partner may discover the lump, or your doctor may find it during a routine physical exam or screening mammogram. Other signs might include: the symptoms listed below. ---------------------------------------… lump or swelling in the armpit changes in breast size or shape dimpling or puckering of the skin – thickening and dimpling skin is sometimes called orange peel redness, swelling and increased warmth in the affected breast inverted nipple – nipple turns inwards crusting or scaling on the nipple A mammogram is done & if it shows suspicion of breast cancer An ultrasound may be done but also a core biopsy which shows proof breast cancer is present. I was diagnosed but already had it 2 yrs but I had dcis .& there was no lumps. . DCIS cannot be felt by a woman in early stages. Breast Cancer does not become painful until later stages unless it is inflammatory breast cancer.

Pain isn't a breast cancer symptom. Take it to a doctor if you are that worried.

The chances of breast cancer at 18 are one in 1.3 million - that's less than 0.0001%, and less than half your risk of being struck by lightning. The chances of breast cancer occurring in both breasts are much smaller than that. Early breast cancer usually has no symptoms at all. Pain is rarely a sign of breast cancer - most people diagnosed with breast cancer have felt no pain at all. Where there is pain, it is because the cancer is advance which, in the extremely unlikely case of an18 year old with breast cancer, it would not have had time to become. And pain associated with breast cancer is constant rather than intermittent. The most likely explanation for intermittent breast pain, especially in a teenager, is that it is hormonal pain connected to the menstrual cycle. This is extremely common; in fact it would be a rare woman who had never experienced it. The fact that the pain is in both breasts makes it even more likely that this is the case, and even less likely that it is anything sinister. I suggest you monitor the pain for a couple of months, note when it occurs and if you're still concerned, see your doctor for reassurance. It's true that it is way too simplistic to say 'pain is not a breast cancer symptom'. It can be; it was for me - and the excuse I gave myself for delaying seeing my doctor for some months was 'breast cancer doesn't hurt'. But my cancer was already at stage 3. For an 18 year old (whose risk of breast cancer is almost zero, and whose risk of cancer in both breasts is even smaller) breast pain, especially in both breasts, is almost certainly normal hormonal activity

There are none. Your intermittent pain has nothing to do with Breast Cancer. It is definitely nothing serious. Early stage Breast cancer does not exhibit Pain. See your doctor.

Genetic Causes Family history has long been known to be a risk factor for breast cance BRCA1 and BRCA2 are abnormal genes that, when inherited, markedly increase the risk of breast cancer to a lifetime risk estimated between 40%-85%. Women with these abnormal genes also have an increased likelihood of developing ovarian cancer. Women who have the BRCA1 gene tend to develop breast cancer at an early age. Hormonal influences play a role in the development of breast cancer. Women who start their periods at an early age (12 or younger) or experience a late menopause (55 or older) have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer. Conversely, being older at the time of the first menstrual period and early menopause tend to protect one from breast cancer. Several studies comparing groups of women with high- and low-fat diets, however, have failed to show a difference in breast cancer rates. symptoms: Breast deformity or misshapen breast Breast lump Breast pain Change in the look and feel of the skin of the breast, such as dimpling or puckering Change in the size, shape or appearance of the breast New onset of inverted nipple Nipple discharge or tenderness Rash or sore on the breast or nipple Swelling of one arm Weight loss Diagnosis of breast cancer usually is comprised of several steps, including examination of the breast, mammography, possibly ultrasonography or MRI, and, finally, biopsy. Biopsy is the only definitive way to diagnose breast cancer. source:http://www.healthcarenets.com/2011/07/breast-cancer-cause-symptoms-treatment.html
