What are my odds of havng inherited the breast cancer gene?
-
my mom had invasive lobular carcinoma diagnosed at age 50, it was so larget they think it was there for up to 10 years (this type grows really slowly) and even though it's less likely to develop in the other breast she had suspicion for cancer in the 2nd breast and had it removed also. I am 32 and having a breast ultrasound next week (ultrasound because the type she had is not detectable on mammograms, she had mammos every year and they never caught it). I just had a breast exam last week and they felt nothing so the ultra sound is a precaution i will have every year. I know that because she had it, I have twice the risk of getting it then people with no family history. Her cancer was estrogen receptive also.

Answer:
Yeah, what Denise and Tarkarri said. Plus a lump is a lump. If a lump shows up on ultrasound, it'll show up on a mammo. Why would your dr say that with only one person in your family that's had breast cancer? Brain tumors have nothing to do with a mammo or ultrasound.

I would have thought your doctor would have answered this question, but it is very slim to none as there is no reason to believe you mother had a hereditary type and your risk is not twice that of people with no family history and you don’t need screening exams until you are 40 like the rest of us.

Lobular carcinoma is not normally considered to have an inheritable component. My lobular carcinoma was detectable on mammogram, I would think the ultrasound is purely because of your young age. There is nothing in what you have said to give any indication that you are at higher than average risk or why you should start testing before age 40. Add: your Dr is obviously the first person you should go to for advice. They have knowledge of your complete medical history unavailable to anyone else. Any advice on this forum is general, you may be an exception for reasons of which we are unaware.
