Is this a bladder cyst?

What are the chances for a calcified cyst in the kidney to become cancerous?

  • I recently saw an urologist who told me I needed "key hole" surgery to remove this calcified cyst because it may become cancerous. He also added that they may have to remove the whole kidney because the cyst is close to an artery. This cyst has been present for over twenty years and never posed any problem, I have no symptoms of cancer and no pain whatsoever. So what are really the chances in percentage that this cyst become cancerous over time ? To remove a whole kidney on this odd chance that a 4 cms cyst become cancerous seems to me unnecessary and creating risks of infection or more for very little gain (last time I had general anesthesia the anesthesist told me that they had "almost lost me" during the surgery - removal of a small cancerous tumour in the bladder in 1992) Thanks for your advice !

  • Answer:

A whole kidney can be removed laparoscopically. If you're afraid of a partial nephrectomy, you could go that route.
