What does it mean when a bone scan shows that... please read??
-
So my Mom is having severe bone pain, in her hips and legs. She's already had a blood clot removed, and it still hurt. She went in to get a bone scan, and now they told her that she needs to have an MRI.. aparrently the documentation she picked up from the hospital showed that they were looking for metastatic CA. She had the MRI today, no one will tell her anything except that her hip bone looked like it had been chewed on?? What does this mean??

Answer:
I am so sorry to hear about your mom, who told you it looked like that? Guaranteed if if is cancer they will tell you right away, it sounds like she might have osteoporosis, which is a degenerative disease and the bones can become very very brittle which may explain why her hip looks chewed? But if the documentation said they were looking for metastic cancer i am afraid that is not a very good sign. If it is cancer and her hip looks like that the cancer has probably spread quite a bit. They don;t screw around when it comes to this, so rest assured they act very very fast if they find anything, and hopefullty it isn;t metastic caner. What are other signs of cancer in your mother? high blood cell count? Has the doctor said anything to your mother about cancer? The radiologis technicians are not alllowed to say anything, they are not qualified and the mri has to be read by a doctor, and if he sees anything then he has to consult with other physicians and then they figure out where to go next. I am sooooo sorry to hear your mother is in pain, my family and i will pray for you. You really need to be somewhat aggresive when it comes to your mother, and the doctors. They are extremelyt busy, and it would be good if somebody in the family was there everytime so they have all the information, as the patient in amongst their pain and anxiety can forget what was said and often doesn;t really understand as the doctors and nurses use extremelly difficult lingo and you really need to ask alot of questions. WRite them down, so as not to forget, and speak loudly on what your mother wants as they are really busy, and sometimes there are other priorities. Take care and i hope all goes well.

I am a medical biller for a group of 40 radiologists. This could mean many things. Just don't panic. Even if it's cancer, it's treatable. If she doesn't get an answer tomorrow (being it's Friday) someone in the family needs to call the doctor and be very aggressive that you want an answer before the weekend. She can't be expected to wait until Monday to get the results of her MRI. Good luck.

"Chewed on" sounds vague but I would say it sounds like there's some bone loss. Maybe it's just osteoporosis (age related bone loss). Just tell her to follow up and make sure the reviewing doctor doesn't forget to tell her the conclusion. The technicians in the MRI center aren't allowed to give any medical advice.

Wow I don't know what it means. I have had several people close to me that had metastatic Cancer and never heard the bone looked like it had been chewed on....weird? It could possibly be an error in the bone scan and they are doing the MRI to get a better look at things. Hang in there.....hopefully it is not metastatic cancer and her diagnoses will be better.

metastatic ca? did she have cancer previously? their saying that the cancer is eating away at her hip-bone...im assuming. she'll probably need a hip replacement.

It probably means that she has osteoporosis. It's where the bone is losing calcium and becoming porous. There are several medicines out there Fosomax, Actonel, medicines that help reverse osteoporosis. She will need to be careful because the bones become more fragile.

wierd!!how could her bone gotton chewed on?and im so sorry for ur mom!!!i hope she gets better!!!
I think it means a dry joint. If you want to fix this right get on a proper diet from the health food store. They will help get her on the right food.
Questionable
I think she is having some sort of Calcium problem, in which as in Osteoporosis (or Arthritis), the calcium is being leeched out of the bones and is not replaced. This is considered a hormone problem, and hormone re-placement is prescribed for it. It is usually an old persons (especially women) problem. My mother died from it.

i dont want to give you sad news but if the bone scan results read "metastatic" she probably has distinct focal lesions on the bone scan that are suggestive of metastatic cancer to the bones. these results are very specific osteoporosis would have shown a generalized or at least large, regional decreases in bone density on the bone scan. your mother needs to have the MRI so that the doctors can identify the primary lesion hope she gets well. god bless
