Is skin cancer hereditary?

I don't get why skin cancer isn't hereditary?

  • Okay...this question is for biologists or people educated in the field. Say a mother has a defected gene in the mitochondrial DNA that codes for the protein that oxidizes free radicals in the cell (coenzyme Q10 maybe)...why can't this be passed on to her offspring if the egg contributes its mitochondria to the zygote? The offspring would then have the mitochondrial defect and the build up of free radicals in the cells can cause skin cancer...

  • Answer:

You sound very knowledgeable in biology. This may be over the heads of even the best on this site. It's beyond me off hand, and I was very good as a clinical cancer doctor. Most of us have clinical experience rather than benchwork research. You may have to look this up yourself. I'll be surprised if any of my friends on this site will know the answer. Even DeniseDDS may be stumped on this one. You might float this question in another section where the biologists hang out. This site may help http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerCauses/GeneticsandCancer/heredity-and-cancer Or this http://www.facingourrisk.org/info_research/hereditary-cancer/hereditary-genetics/index.php
