My horse is having trouble breathing?
-
My gelding has been having trouble breathing lately. I've listened to him breathe and i can hear when he's straining to breathe in. Also when he breathes in his ribs really show because he is sucking in so hard. I've heard of horses having trouble breathing when it is really hot and humid but it is only 77°F and it's night time. Do you still think the heat could be the cause or is their maybe something else causing it? If you think it may be something else please put what you think it may be.

Answer:
Looks like an upper respiratory infection. Treatment of upper respiratory infections involves certain medications, supportive care and environmental factors. Medications such as anti-inflammatories may be prescribed to reduce symptoms. Ensure that your horse is vaccinated against viral infections which will help to minimize the duration and severity of the disease. Avoid giving your horse human cough syrups or decongestants, as these are potentially dangerous. In order to speed recovery, a comfortable, dry but well-ventilated barn or stable, adequate rest, palatable foods as well as plenty of fresh, clean water and tender loving care are essential. Natural Remedies Natural and holistic remedies have a long history of having a positive effect on the respiratory system. Is he on pasture or is he eating from round bales? maybe the hay dust is bothering him. *I agree sounds like heaves you may need to get some dex powder, take the round bale away and feed flakes to avoid him having to shove his nose in the bale and inhale the dust it will ease it a little for him until you can get a vet.
