How to stop a horse bucking... re-training?
-
Okay, I started working with a horse about 7 months ago, and he's progressing really well. But he gets excited the harder work we do (jumping higher, cross country etc). Also when we go on hacks if I canter him he bucks a few times and then is fine. I don't mind him doing it out on a hack because I know he's just happy and they're only little bucks. But now he's started doing it in the school; the other day he went mental, and when I tried to stop him he started bucking - literally ANY pressure on his mouth and he bucks. It's starting to take the p!ss a little bit now and he's getting dangerous. I can sit his bucks when hes cantering, but when he tucks his head in and does a huge one it really scares me! Luckily I haven't fallen off yet but I'm worried I will soon! Any help on what to do...? x

Answer:
My first question would be what and how much are you feeding him? What work is he getting, how often, stabled or turned out? Generally when horses start to take the Mickey it is because they are over fed and under worked.

I would say it's his teeth, but also check the fit of his saddle and see if maybe you have his bridle to snug. Also you may consider getting an appointment with a equine chiropractor. If this is not medical you need to get him with a trainer. If you can't afford a trainer keep his head up when you ride and ride him through the bucks never stop after because that is a reward. Work him hard after he bucks and he will learn that bucking is not a fun thing to do! You should not allow him to buck at anytime because bad behaviors tend to worsen if the horse is allowed to get away with them.

The pressure on his mouth part makes me wonder... have you had his teeth floated recently? Depending on how old he is, are his wolf teeth coming in? It sounds to me like his teeth hurt. I would check his teeth before you start re-training.

You say he was bucking to any pressure you applied in the school - I'd have his teeth checked. Dentists are relatively cheap - mine charges £25 to come out and that includes any work she has to do. If its not teeth, have you tried lunging him before working him? It might just take a little fizz out of him and help him to focus more. It will also help to raise his fitness levels as 15 minutes lunging is equivalent to an hour's ride. If all else fails, you can buy a thing called a "daisy rein" which fastens to the top of his bridle, runs down the length of his neck and clips onto the d rings of the saddle. This will stop him getting his head down to do those big bucks. It will be ok for hacking but not for jumping.

Well I would suggest getting a trainer, you don't want to do anything that is potentially dangerous to yourself. If he gets mad when you tough his mouth his teeth may be bothering him, or he has a very sensitive face. Get his teeth done and instead of pulling on his face sit back and drive him with your seat. If he still does it, make the wrong this hard and the right thing easy. If he likes to jump. REWARD him with that, when hes good he gets to jump when hes not he get put away without it. Check to make sure the saddle isn't pitching him. Also you may want to try grain that was less protein and more fat. I use calm and cool supplement, and it calms my horse down alittle bit and he hasn't been bucking as much anymore.

You're letting him get away with it, so he's going to continue to do so. You shouldn't allow your horse to buck while riding if you don't want him doing it. Have you considered that tack might be an issue? Has he been saddle checked recently and how are his teeth? The pressure on the mouth makes me think that he's sore and is ready for a floating. Eliminate any physical problems before the retraining but in the mean time, discipline him when he bucks, even if they are only little crow hops. Disengage his hind end by pulling his nose to your knee and get him working in circles until he stops doing it.

Think you need to get a vet to look in his mouth just to be sure and his back. And get a saddle fitter to check his tack.
