This horse needs basic foundation training. You might take a look at Clinton Anderson's colt starting video. That will give you some good information as to the steps it can take to help gain the trust of this horse It won't make you a colt starter, but hopefully it will give some guidance. She needs to build her confidence and be able to respect you but she will not just give it, you have to earn it. Track horses have not had a good life and have no reason to have warm fuzzy feelings about humans. You have to revamp her opinions of humans and you have your work cut out for you. I have started many track horses and some are more demanding than others but all are challenging. Why do you think they wound up coming to me, the owner could not even lead them properly, but it is just that they were never taught the basics. With them, it is mostly force that they have been accustomed to in their treatment. You have to change that but the course you have to take to make those changes can be difficult. It takes time and patience and handling ability. When I hear people talk about doing "join up" with these horses, it alarms me. The last thing this horse needs is for you to turn her loose in a round pen and have you chase her around. It would be so much more beneficial to do on-line work with her in the beginning. Give her some time to get to trust you and understand that you are not chasing her to hurt her. More running is the last thing this horse needs. She needs to learn that being near you is good, not that she has to be running for her life and that means she can trust you and you want her to be close. Make sense? I know nothing about you ability, so I make these statements with the generalization I have been exposed to with this type of situation. The process of having your horse "join up" with you is good and all of my horses will come in to me when I ask. I can send them out and ask them to circle at liberty in a 20 acre pasture with their buddies grazing nearby and they never leave me and will come in when I ask. But this horse has a long way before she has that kind of trust in you and I just don't think there is anything to be gaining NOW in this stage of her traiing by using this technique UNLESS you are somewhat of an EXPERT in this TECHNIQUE. Make sense? I would say to work on all the other things in basic training and when the time comes, then you can send your horse away from you and get her to trust you when the time is more appropriate. Just my thoughts on the matter after many years of dealing with track TB's. Be safe.
Something I did with the horse I just got, who has been handled very little is.... When I first met him everyday I came to the stables I would bring him a carrot and stand outside of his stall and talk to him, and pet his face and neck and whenever he let me pet him and didn't pull away I would give him praise. If he tried to pull away I'd use the pressure release method. Just recently I have gotten inside of his stall and have been petting him all over touching his legs and doing the same things, to create trust and a bond between us... I have also taught him to back up on my que and do hips around, all without a halter and lead! I can already tell that he is getting more and more comfortable with me each week. So try some of these things, it could help build a special bond between you two:) hope I was some help
If you want a horse to trust you, you gotta be trustworthy. Be steady and don't randomly change how you are doing things, you will only confuse the horse more. Keep doing natural horsemanship with her. Trust and bonds take time to develop but will last a lifetime if you do it right. Be gentle, yet firm, keep your patience, don't rush things. Listen to your horse to see what it needs help with. There is a quote that says 'A good horse-person can hear a horse speak, and a great horse-person can hear a horse whisper; but a bad horse-person can't hear a horse even if it screams' Remember this when you are with your horse and strive to be the great horse-person. It'll be worth it. Just don't give up on your horse.
Crazy as it is but horses are just like humans. Someone breaks someones trust its very hard to put trust in another. I dealt with a thoroughbred arabian that didnt have trust. You gotta develop a very close relationship with the horse before they'll open up and trust you. Whatever you do when you build the relationship do not get mad or frustrated, this will only make the horse shy away more, be gentle let her know she can trust you and your not gonna harm her. It'll take time though
Just take things really slowly, the worst thing you could do would be to rush her so you could ride sooner. Try just hanging out in the paddock with her and groom her while she eats. This will be relaxing for both you and her. Therefore you won't be holding in any tension that you probably weren't aware of in the first place. Taker her out to pick at grass outside of her paddock. Just standing calmly with you will help enormously. I know it doesn't sound like much but it's the little things that really help. Lead her out on walks all the time so she gets new stimulation and is not stuck in the same paddock. Every new, good experience you share with her will help to build up a bond and her trust in you.
There will be a reason your mare doesn't trust people, she may have had bad experiences in the past. My mare was the same... What I did... -Don't ride her every day, give her 1 or 2 days off a week, on these days just spend some bonding time with your horse, you could groom her, lunge her or do trust building activities. -For my trust building with my mare, I set up a bunch of scary things in the outdoor arena at my barn, all the things she was afraid of (there was a car outside it, a big mirror, brightly coloured jumps etc) I let her into the arena for a look around, she was clearly unsure of them. Then, I would go in with her, and try and get her to walk past them, by me doing it first, then leaving her by. Make sure you talk to your horse when you do this, it is important that they see your voice as comfort. -Reward her when she does good things, she needs to know that your her friend as well as her master. -Make riding enjoyable for you both, try doing different things, in different places. Also, don't always ride by yourself, get a friend to come with you -Have patience; there is no quick way to get your horse to trust you, as long as you trust her, it will happen eventually -Don't be nervous; your horse will tell if their rider is nervous, if somethings scaring her, it will only make it worse if you're frightened too. Ride her through it.
Time. Just takes time.
