How much does a checkup cost in your area? Do you need them?
-
Ok so a lot of people around here don't give there horses check ups. My old loan horse (From when I was 6) got one at least once a year. I always thought that they should get them once a year or more, it cost around $150 or so. Around here it's "To expensive" and the vet only gets called when horse is sick (If that :| ) Anyway so my question is Do you need them every year (Or should get them) and how much do they cost in YOUR area?

Answer:
Annual checkups are the reason I found the tumors in my gelding's sheath. They are the reason I found the heart murmur in one of my rescues. They are the reason the heavy parasite load was found in another of my rescues. They are the reason another of our gelding's Cushing's disease was diagnosed before it became serious. They are the reason several horses I've owned over the years lived out their years comfortably instead of dying early, and dying in pain. Annual checkups are necessary if you care about the quality of life you give your horse and strive to be a responsible horse owner. Uncaring asshats that are too cheap to give their horses proper medical care (preventative care included) should sell their horses and get a bike. Checkups and preventative care also save money. It's a lot easier to find and treat ailments before they get out of hand and the treatments are generally cheaper and much less time-consuming.

When the horses get their annual immunizations, the check ups are done on that visit. In my area, we also have some immunizations that are twice yearly so the horses are always checked again.. I can't recall what the exam fee is but there is a barn call also so with multiple horses, it is hundreds but examinations are included in those visits. Because of the immunization schedule in my area, horses will always see a vet at least twice per year. I feel it is irresponsible for owners not to have their horses examined at least once per year. It is negligence, simply put.

Yes. You do need them. Most Vets don't want to see your horse unless they see them when they're healthy. My Vet basically told us if we didn't get a yearly Vet Check she would not come out for other reasons. That way she knows what the horse is like when it's healthy. It helps her better diagnose other problems. Vet Checks are great for keeping an eye on existing conditions and finding new ones. Here it's $35-50 for the actual exam, plus $50 or so for the Ranch Call. We get our horses checked once a year and they receive their shots and have their teeth floated at the same time. By the time it's done it's almost $350 per horse.

The only time i get a vet check is when i first buy a horse or if they get sick. And the standard vetcheck from my vet in cali is 35 plus the farm call which varries between 15 and 45. Other then that my horses get their teeth checked once a year and that only cost me the farm call. Hope i helped.

I don't get yearly check ups, and I don't know of anyone at my barn who does.. you will probably notice if there is something wrong and can call the vet out then. In my area a check up is $50 plus the cost of travelling, so it depends where you are located. Usually about $75 though.

Well, for a check up, it's about $80 plus the barn call fee. That includes the entire body check up~ temperature, lungs, heart beat, weight, the lot. i would get them every year (i am getting one the first of February each year.) just to be on the safe side, and to make sure every thing is in tip-top shape! :) Happy Trails!

A check-up in my area starts at $150 ( there's only one vet now since the other retired sooo he jacked up his prices figuring people need him so he can charge whatever he wants!!!) $75 for the barn call & another $75 for "professional" time.....this is all before the horse is even touched!! I just got my horse and his last check-up was on march with his previous owner so I guess I'll have to wait til march to see what gets tacked on to the bill! But YES, do an annual!!!

Every year at least. At the farm we had 50+ horse's. Everyone got checked, it cost a couple hundred but every year or so we found a foal or mare with something wrong, and we treated it. It's unfair to let animals suffer, you might not even know its there until its to late!

I would have not idea! You should be calling the local Vets and asking them. I have dealt with many horses for years and I have never had a horse just have a check up. I very seldom have had a sick horse and the few times I have I have taken care of them myself.
