How to stop a horse from bucking?

  • Im a very experienced rider, with trail rides, and not with shows because i have never liked to show or be "proper" I ride for fun and because i love horses. But i have been on many bucking horses but have never fallen off once. Usaully when I have a horse that starts bucking when im on, i imedietly kick, and kick until that horse is going as fast as i want it to go, and by that time its bucking spree is over, or i just swing my leg over and hop off in mid buck. I have trid just pulling back or to the sides but it seems as if it makes the horses I ride very unbalanced. I just want to know if there are any other good ways to stop a horse from bucking that would be ok for a younger/ not so experianced rider to do. Thanks

    Jerk his head up and kick him in the belly. FYI - jumping off is a great way to clean the gene pool.

As you feel him go down to buck (or even in the middle of bucking) turn his head either to the left or right and you have to pull it in (further enough to turn him but not too far to strain him) because he has to stop bucking to get his balance back if your making his head turn. ( it's much easier if i could show you but i can't ,it's hard to explain) Anyway, try it next time(: Also, it might help if you find the reason why he's bucking...bad saddle, sore back, hurt somewhere etc..maybe he's trying to tell you he's hurting!

You should not just jump off mid buck...that's basically making the horse think that if they buck they can get rid of you and then they are likely to keep doing it. To make them stop bucking you should turn them in circles and pull their head up...horse's cannot buck if you do these 2 things.
