Weird nasally breathing with my horse?

My horse is coughing and breathing weird?

  • Hi I live in south florida and its around 50 degrees outside and for florida that's rare. My horse is 13 years old and has never had any problems other than 2 colics a few years apart. I just saw him he was laying down when i walked up and i went in with him and he got up and looked at me like i had 3 heads and i've owned my horse for 3 years and have seen him every day since then. After he looked at weirdly he put his head down coughed and then paused and coughed again. I'm a huge worry wort please give me answers. Thanks.

    your horse could have heaves, or it could be allergy related. i would, honestly, have the vet come and check your horse out. i have a horse with bad allergies, and can not "handle" dust without that similar reaction. of course, i give him some allergy meds and be sure to wet down all hay he eats.

Do you feed oats? Some times different batches of oats are dustier then others. I wet mine down to prevent the difference but dusty oat can cause a cough. Or if the horse is kept in a urine filled stall it can cause upper resp. problems. I remember once when I was younger my mothers horse had a cough and we finally figured out that it was her stall location. She was stalled next to the drop from the hay loft and when the hay hit the ground dust would fly up once we moved her waaala no more problems. Check his area and think outside the box!

i agree.. deffinitly get the vet out... it could be alergies.. but could it be the cold? my horse coughs every morning and i assume its because its so cold outside.. (its between 30 and 45 degrees here at night) she doesnt cough during the day.. and she only coughs once or twice in the morning. just a guess if nothing else adds up...
