What is the lump on my horses belly?

Found lump on the horses leg, vet said arthiritus, but Im thinking splint?

  • So I was riding my horse and she felt strange cantering on one leg, she wasn't limping majorly, just dropping her leg, almost being lazy off it. The women watching said she looked lame, so I jumped off and had a look at her leg and there was a lump on the inside of her fetlock (front left leg) So I trotted her up, she didn't look lame like limping or anything, just sort of stiff - tiptoe-ing. So I gave her a few days off and kept her in in hope that she might have just tweeked something playing out in the field with another horse. She still seemed spre yesterday, so the vet came out today, had a quick look at the lump and said it could be arthiris, but I'm not so sure, it just doesn't seem to look like arthiritis, I thought more of a splint? The lump is rock hard with no heat what so ever, there is no heat on either of the front legs. Her shoeing is up to date etc. I didn't have her vetted when I bought her, I never really noticed the lump before that. She used to jump 1m30 tracks, so I always thought she could have a splint from the past jumping, then it just flarred up? Not sure though, really not convinced with my vet, any other opinions would be great

  • Answer:

Sounds like an old splint to me.

Get a second opinion. (I do hope you know more than one equine vet. We keep two of them in harness, just in case, and know two others casually.) No one here on YA, not even the few vets and vet techs who show up, can examine your horse without hands on. It's kind of hard doing that over the computer. Check the spelling of arthritis. Lots of people say it arthur-itis and spell it sort of that way. But it's not. I'm sure it's not.

without doing an actual lameness exam there is no way to tell where the lameness is coming from. If the lump isn't painful to pressure, it's less likely that it is the source. A 'splint' would be found at about mid to distal cannon bone, a bit above the fetlock and sitting just to the inside or outside of the cannon bone. If she is still sore she should have a lameness exam complete with palpation, hoof testers, flexions and disgnostic nerve blocks to determine the source

normally you would find heat. treat with ice packs etc and see what happens it isn't going to cost you anything. x-ray will tell you if it is arthritis.
