What's a good 8 piece drum set?

5 piece drum kit set up inspiration?

  • i have a 5 piece drum set, and i really dont like the normal 'rock' set up (two toms off of base drum and one tom on the floor) i tried messing about with two toms of one stand.. i liked it, but when i added my cymbals it got on my nerves. how do you guys play you 5 pieces? (p.s im not made of money, so suggest a rack haha) thankkkss :)

  • Answer:

There really aren't alternative ways to configure a standard 5 piece kit. I actually turned mine into a 4 piece kit years ago and never looked back. I hate having more than one mounted tom now and won't even set in with a band unless the drummer uses only one rack tom. You could mount the other tom to the left of the snare like Travis Barker does. Below is a picture of that setup. http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Orange-County-Drums-and-Percussion-Travis-Barker-Signature-5Piece-Shell-Pack?sku=360871

you can alter the angle that each piece is facing. A couple years ago i was experimenting like you are and i decided to try and secure them to the walls. It's pretty BA once you get the hang of it. If you have a sturdy enough wall, you can secure the entire set and play with your back on the floor.

The "normal" rock setup is the norm for a reason: it is generally the most efficient. In this setup, the toms are as close together as possible, making it the best way to play as fast as possible. Any other setup won't get you the efficiency of the standard setup. What it may come down to is the smaller things, such as the angle and height of the drums. This is where you will want to experiment to see what best suits you. Of course, you don't have to do the norm. That's the beauty of the drums; you can set it up however you want!! Personally, I like to use this setup: http://www.mikeportnoy.com/drums/mirage/ jk :P
