Which is easier to learn jazz bass guitar or jazz guitar?

Which 4-string electric bass guitar is better?

  • Okay. Me and my friends had a five person band, with a lead singer, guitarist, pianist, drummer, and bassist. Recently, our bassist left us because we "sucked", so our lead singer took up guitar, which was what I play, and demanded I learn bass. I have been playing guitar for about a year now, and have learned a little bit of bass from my cousin who has been playing for six years. Anyways, I have decided to take up bass and start lessons soon. Sadly, my parents will only pay for lessons and not the actual bass. Since I'm a mere kid, I don't have a lot of money, so I have to choose between two, cheap and fairly nice basses ( links further down ). Our band mostly plays alternative rock, indie rock, and occasional punk rock. Here are the basses I am trying to get: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Yamaha-RBX374-Electric-Bass-Guitar-519038-i1150344.gc?CJAID=10449560&CJPID=1759905 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-by-Fender-Standard-Jazz-Bass-102581394-i1166295.gc?CJAID=10449560&CJPID=1759905 So which one should I get. The Squier makes a nice, deep sound and looks awesome, but the Yamaha is supposedly great for any genre of music. Help?

  • Answer:

The Squier!!! Yamaha is not really a well recognized brand of bass guitar, they are better at making keyboards and school musical instruments than guitars. Fender is a well recognized brand, known for good quality. Personally I think you'd be wasting your money with the Yamaha, but if it sounds better then go with the one you like more.

If that's your price range, try checking craigslist or something for a used bass before buying something you'll quickly outgrow. With a little patience you could score a better instrument. If you're set on one of those two, I'd probably get the Yamaha.

I would suggest that you go to Guitar Center and play around with both basses. I also agree with the person who suggested that you should check out Craig's List or find a respected seller on ebay to see if you can pick something up inexpensively - you may be able to get a MIM (made in mexico) Fender for the same price as the Squier or Yamaha would cost new.

My ex-girlfriend had a yamaha bass and for what it is, it does sound really nice. She had it for quite a while too. Yamaha makes pretty nice instruments. Squire on the other hand...are bargain instruments at best.. You can learn to play on them and practise with them and everything, but they won't stand the test of time and they don't sound that great.. Fender has already lost some of their quality control..these are even cheaper (and more cheaply made). My vote definitely goes to Yamaha bass. BTW, putting a new set of quality strings on it as soon as you get it can make it sound better. D'Addario and Ernie Ball make good strings.
