Learning how to play a piano at the age of 16 - 18? Some advices? and virtual piano?
-
Hi! I'm 16 years old and I have always wanted to play the piano. I have been told that in order to play the piano well you must start at a very young age. My family can't afford a piano and my school doesn't have a music room. Some people said I can learn from the internet or download a virtual piano or something but I'm not sure. Can I really learn how to play a piano from my computer? Is there such a program? And If I start learning how to play the piano at my age or in two years time, will I do OK? I'm really determined because I admire piano music.

Hi, If you really love learning piano, then you'll do better than most students. I've been teaching for over 20 years and most of my students originally said they wanted to learn piano, but when they found out that it took more effort than expected, they just quit. Only the ones who REALLY wanted it, continued with their lessons. There was this particular couple with 6 girls, and I taught them for about 2 years. After a few months most of them wanted to quit, except for two of the girls. One of them really loved it and practiced more. For here it wasn't really "practicing" but "performing". She became so good that she chose music as her major and when I later moved to another city, she took over my students. If you can't afford lessons, here's a very good substitute: A few months ago, I was reading in a keyboard magazine about a piano method with great reviews. It's a complete piano method that covers different types of music and it’s for beginners and advanced students. The price is less than the cost of one month of private lessons. In case you're interested, there’s some more information in the link below. Good luck with your music!

There are many avenues to get great piano lessons. There is a great book called Rocket Piano lessons that I found to be the easiest to follow and had great step by step lessons. You can also check you local newspaper. There are always piano teachers advertising in the classified about there services. The best way to find a really good teacher is to get in touch with someone you know who plays the piano. Ask them who their teacher was, who they learned from. The book was the best help for me take a look at it through this site for Rocket Piano lessons.
Hey, it's easier to start from a younger age, but not necesary. I would suggest getting lessons from a piano teacher (maybe outside of school?) Because it makes it much easier and you can have someone guiding you through the process. There are a lot of videos on youtube on how to play songs which can help you learn the piano a bit, but one of the things which is good to learn is HOW TO READ SHEET MUSIC. It makes life a lot easier if you're serious about it. :) If you just want to much around on the computer here's a good site with a virtual keyboard. :) http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/music/piano/
You can't learn to play piano on a computer! You need a piano or at least an electronic keyboard that has a full set of keys, ideally weighted to give the feel of a real piano. If you learned to play on unweighted keys and then played on a real piano you would struggle - there is a little muscular effort in striking piano keys. Pianos can be bought second-hand or rented. I rented one for a while and - if I wanted to - I could buy the piano at any time and ALL my past rental payments would be put towards the price. That's a great deal. Maybe you can find a great deal. Second-hand pianos could be got at all sorts of prices but you need to know/trust what you are getting for your money. So you need to get one from somewhere very trustworthy and/or have someone with you who knows about pianos. Your school/college could be a good place to start in all of this.
