How To Play Piano?

How long would it take me to be able to play something respectable on piano?

  • I have been playing viola for about six years now, and am now 15, and I feel the urge to expand my knowledge of the different instruments I play. So, I have decided to take up piano, informally. My friend will be giving me lessons (he has been pounding the piano for about 10 years now), and I am wondering, how long does it take to learn how to play piano when you already know how to play another instrument? I think that all I'm looking for is technique and reading, rather than musicality and theory (which I have already gained very much from my 6 years of viola). Also, rhythm shouldn't be a problem (I think?). I have looked at other questions about learning piano and I have seen it takes 2-3 years. Now, will knowing how to play another instrument help at all? Or will it be like learning how to play your first instrument? I just took my first 1/2 hour lesson today, and was already able to play a C major scale fairly quickly. So bottom line, how long?

it's all up 2 u.

I never played an instrument before I started piano and I picked it up quickly and easily. I don't play anymore but the first nice simple piece I learnt to play was 'Greensleeves' it's beautiful, respectable and easy to pick up. I havent been playing for years and I can still play it with all the chords with my eyes closed! Good luck!
