How much money and effort would it take to learn guitar?
-
I want to learn how to play guitar and my parents said if i really wanted to i could get lessons [even though my mom thinks guitar is a boy thing -_-] and since my family is trying to save money. I'd like to buy a guitar that will sound decent but no too cheap. How much should that and the other stuff that comes with it cost? Capos, strings, straps ect. & How long will it usually take to learn how to play. I'm hoping the lessons include how to read sheet music too cause i can't do that. I'm wondering what things i should do regularly like practice, replace strings and stuff. be descriptive :]

Playing guitar takes a lot of work and it isn't just a boy thing like your mom thinks! If you have a friend who is familiar with guitars, go to a local guitar store with them and have them help you pick one out that you like and is in your price range. Beginner acoustic shouldn't be more than $175-200. For electric though, it's a different story. I've found amps for around $50 so that and an standard electric (thinking of strat type) might cost around $200 or $300. You can pick up a capo for around $15 or less. Make your own strap! Use an old belt for example. I've seen that most people can at least play a song after 1-2 weeks of playing, some learn fast, some learn slow. If you get a guitar just practice for 1-2 hours a day at minimum. At first see if you can teach yourself because I think that guitar teachers are just a lil too expensive. Use websites like ultimate-guitar.com for help. Finally, replace strings when they start to show signs of rust or won't stay in tune. Hope that helps

It's great to hear you want to learn to play the guitar! Guitars are definitely not just for boys...you will do great! As far as lessons go, be sure to check out TakeLessons.com. They have lessons all over the US and cater to beginners as well as advanced students. You can find a teacher near you and choose the price and length of lesson that best fits your needs. And the certified teachers not only teach you how to play but they work with you on reading music, music theory, etc. You can work with them on what you want to learn and they teach it to you. They will also work with you on what to practice for each lesson through Lesson Journals that you can access through a student account. You can also set your goals together and then learn what you need to do to achieve them. I think you will love playing the guitar. Once you learn how to play you can show your parents that you are a true rockstar! Good luck! PS - When you look at www.takelessons.com, you will see a female guitar player on the homepage :)

Congratulations on wanting to learn how to play guitar! You could learn how to play by your own, you'll save more money too. I'm sure you've got friends who play the guitar right? you should just get free lessons from them. There are many free lessons on the internet too! Just type beginner guitar lessons on google or youtube. well I think that you could learn without the lessons - you now have more money to INVEST on a good acoustic guitar. I recommend the Yamaha FG700S. I think you should learn how to play on an acoustic guitar first. If you would like to get another guitar I would suggest that you still get a Yamaha, It's a solid brand. they make good guitars with good sound in reasonable prices. I also recommend you also buy a capo and a strap immediately, they are cheap. oh and a set of replacement strings also. you'll learn faster if you practice everyday. you should first train your ear to tune the guitar. you can watch youtube videos on how to tune your guitar, how to replace strings etc. everything you want or need to know is in the internet. first learn the basic chords (you don't need to memorize every chord) then simple songs, then plucking then the rest will follow.

It depends, if you get used you might be able to get everything under 300 maybe. I got everything brand new it cost a little under 400. Get on websites and look around. Check out Music123.com Call stores tell them you want to start playing and what they recommend and that you are on a budget. Tell em to get you a good deal. The internet is a good teacher and FREE! Learn how to read guitar tab just google and youtube stuff. That way when you go to an instructor you won't be a total noob. How long it takes depends on how much effort you are putting in to be honest. I've been playing for a year now and I am surprised at how much I have accomplished. I'm getting closer to shreddin everyday. :) It's a great investment.
