Unsigned bands and musicians in the music world?

Is it weird to not be into music or know much about bands/musicians?

  • I've never really been able to get into music all that much. While I know of the most prolific musicians and music (y'know, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Hendrix etc), that's about as far as my knowledge extends, and even then I only know a few bits of the lyrics. I can hum along to the actual music itself, though. Whenever someone asks 'whats your favourite band/song', it's embarrassing since I can't really give them a straight answer. I've just never cared enough to develop 'favourites'. Is it weird that I don't know or care about music much? Is anyone else in a similar situation?

    No there is no problem. I have a graduate degree in music and rarely listen to music unless I am listening to a live band or performing myself. It makes me a better listener when there is a performance and I enjoy it much more. 95% of what is released today and on current radio stations is mindless rubbish anyway. Listening to "disposable music" by constantly having rubbish going on the car, at work, on the iPod, non stop day after day makes you a musical dope.

No it doesn't matter i dont like football, if everyone were to like the same things how boring would that be, its your life live it the way you want to, people always moan at me for not wearing makes of clothes like lacoste and fred perry but why should i wear them when i feel comfortable in a 2 pound fruit of the loom polo shirt which looks exactly the same as a fred perry but without the logo.

Maybe your passions lie elsewhere, but at least you can avoid silly conversations with muso-evangelists who think that their favourite band is the 'best'. Music is a very popular and accesible medium, so a lot of people are into it and it's easy to bond with people over music because of this. But if you're not that into it then that's your own choice. I have a similar thing with soccer... 98% of guys i know love soccer but it bores me. If you want to get into music more then get a DAB radio and cruise the different stations....
