I have a home studio and I use a pod line 6. I find amps not flexible to use as they dont have variety of sound. with the pod connected to a good mixer/soundcard I am very satisfied (for recordings) MW http://miketheblacksheep.wordpress.com
Well, the best brands of amps are Randall, Marshall, Line 6, and Krank. Although most of these can run a couple thousand dollars they do have some smaller practice ones that are good to use. If you are looking for a smaller practice type of amp that has lots of effects go with the Line 6 spider amp. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-Spider-III-75-Combo-Amplifier?sku=482272 That amp is the Line 6 spider 3. It is 75 watts, has tons of effects and presets and its 300 dollars. A really good bet if you wanted a good amp and effects for the price. My friend actually owns this amp and it has presets for Pantera and Ozzy. Like it has a preset for "Cowboys from Hell" so you just pick that preset and then you have the sound of Pantera, its really cool.
Fender frontman 65R 65 watts, 259$ about Fender amp, good brand. I don't own one, but I have a Fender Frontman 15G which is decent =\. I've been playing for 9 months and I'm going to upgrade straight to a Marshall half stack for 470$. My reccomendation: save yourself the money and upgrade directly to a high quality amp now, instead of wasting hundreds of dollars on slight upgrades. Spend like 500$ on a quality amp now and you will never regret it.
