What is the difference between a bass and a kick drum?
-
Right then, my boyfriend and i are having an argument about the difference between a kick drum and a bass drum (this is all because i called his guitar hero drum set a bass drum pedal not a kick drum pedal) i say that there isn't any difference apart from the fact that one is what the American use (kick drum) and the other is an English term (bass drum) while he says that its defiantly not called a bass drum and that he only believes his teacher who says its called a kick drum and apparently if you use the term bass drum your wrong.... Can you please help settle this argument!! its really annoying me much thanks xx

Your BF is wrong. Kick drum is slang for a bass drum that is part of a drum kit. Bass drum is the generic term for that type of percussion instrument. It IS called a Bass Drum Pedal, too. apparently your BF hasn't read any musician magazines. A product from Musician's Friend: "Sound Percussion Double Bass Drum Pedal with Drop Clutch"
No difference what so ever... its the same exact drum just different names... Bass refers to its tone compared to all of the other drums and kick refers to the pedal "kicking" the drum head... it's the same drum
They are essentially the same thing. In a standard drum set the largest drum is the bass drum, which is frequently called the "Kick Drum" since it is used by a foot pedal. However not all bass drums are kick drums, a bass drum used in a marching band is not a kick drum.
LOL that's like saying "no you got it wrong drum stick isn't two words, it's drumstick" THERE IS NO DIFFERENCEEEEE omg and yes like said before get a bf that actually plays a real drum kit roflol
I've been a drummer for many years and both terms are correct. Bass drum is what you will hear it called by the manufacturer and in adds, etc. Many drummers tend to say kick drum. It is the exact same thing. Same deal with the pedal, although I tend to call it a bass pedal instead of a kick pedal but it's all the same. Tell your BF that owning Guitar Hero doesn't make him an expert on drums. But the game still rules!!
Your boyfriend got mad cause you called his fake bass drum by the wrong name. What a loser. Bass drum is correct.
kick pedal, bass drum. its like a drumstick and a snare drum.
